storm cells
Localized thunder systems
Storm cells are discrete, self-contained units of convective activity within a larger weather system—essentially the building blocks of thunderstorms.
Each cell has its own cycle of updrafts and downdrafts, typically lasting thirty minutes to an hour before dissipating.
A single thunderstorm may contain multiple storm cells at different stages of development.
Meteorologists track storm cells on radar to predict severe weather: The storm cell is moving northeast at forty miles per hour.
