squall lines

Severe weather fronts

A squall line is a band of severe thunderstorms that forms along a cold front or ahead of it, producing strong winds, heavy rain, and sometimes tornadoes.

These lines can stretch for hundreds of miles and move rapidly across terrain: The squall line swept through overnight, knocking down power lines across three counties.
