storefront church

Retail-space worship hall

A storefront church is a small, often independent Christian congregation that meets in a converted retail space rather than a purpose-built house of worship.

Common in urban African American neighborhoods since the early twentieth century, these churches typically occupy former shops in commercial strips: The storefront church held services between a laundromat and a check-cashing place.

The term sometimes carries connotations of humble means or grassroots spirituality.
