stop order
Automatic trading instruction
A stop order is an instruction to buy or sell a security when it reaches a specified price, at which point it becomes a market order.
Investors use stop orders to limit losses or protect gains: I set a stop order to sell if the stock drops below $50.
Also called a stop-loss order when used to cap potential losses.
