stinkdamp
Toxic coal fumes
Stinkdamp is a mining term for hydrogen sulfide gas, recognizable by its rotten-egg smell.
The gas occurs naturally in coal mines and is highly toxic even in small concentrations.
Unlike firedamp (methane), which explodes, stinkdamp kills by poisoning.
Miners historically used the smell as a warning sign, though the gas can deaden the sense of smell at higher levels.
