sour gas
Sulfurous natural gas
Sour gas is natural gas containing significant amounts of hydrogen sulfide, a toxic and corrosive compound.
The term distinguishes it from "sweet gas," which lacks this contamination.
Sour gas requires processing to remove the sulfide before it can be safely used: The pipeline company won't accept sour gas without treatment.
The hydrogen sulfide gives sour gas its characteristic rotten-egg smell and makes leaks particularly dangerous.
