stiff arm
Runner's defensive push
A stiff arm is a defensive move where you extend your arm rigidly to push away or hold off an opponent.
The term comes from American football, where a ball carrier uses the technique to fend off tacklers: He stiff-armed the defender and gained another five yards.
To stiff-arm someone figuratively is to reject or rebuff them: The mayor stiff-armed reporters' questions about the scandal.
