steamer clam
Soft-shelled coastal mollusk
A steamer clam is an edible soft-shell clam found along the Atlantic coast of North America, typically prepared by steaming and served with melted butter.
The thin, brittle shells gape slightly and cannot close completely, distinguishing them from hard-shell clams: We ordered a bucket of steamers at the clam shack.
