state militia
Governor's armed force
A state militia is a military force organized and maintained by an individual U.S. state rather than the federal government.
Historically, militias comprised ordinary citizens who could be called to service in emergencies, distinct from professional standing armies.
Today the term most commonly refers to the National Guard when under state authority, though it can also apply to unorganized militias consisting of able-bodied citizens or to state defense forces that exist separately from the National Guard.
The governor activated the state militia to assist with disaster relief.
