starter motors
Automotive ignition devices
Starter motors are electric motors that crank internal combustion engines to begin the combustion cycle.
Before electric starters became standard in the early twentieth century, drivers had to hand-crank their engines—a dangerous process that could break arms if the engine backfired.
The starter motor engages briefly when you turn the ignition key or press the start button, then disengages once the engine runs on its own.
