stand-up bit

Short comedic monologue

A stand-up bit is a prepared segment of comedy material—a joke or sequence of jokes on a single topic that a comedian performs as part of their act.

Bits are the building blocks of a stand-up routine, typically lasting anywhere from thirty seconds to several minutes: His bit about airline food killed.

A comedian might workshop a bit for months before it feels polished.

The term has spread beyond comedy to mean any rehearsed routine or familiar behavior: He did his whole humble-genius bit during the interview.
