stage directors
Theater's chief coordinators
Stage directors are the people who oversee the artistic vision of a theatrical production, guiding actors' performances, blocking movement, and coordinating design elements into a unified whole.
The role emerged in the late nineteenth century as theater became more complex.
In film and television, the equivalent role is simply called director.
