Orthography competition event
A spelling bee is a competition where participants are eliminated for misspelling words, typically spoken aloud by a judge.
The contests are most popular in American schools, culminating in the nationally televised Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The bee in the name comes from an old sense meaning a gathering for communal work or competition, as in quilting bee.
