spear-throwers

Primitive projectile extenders

Spear-throwers are devices that extend the arm's leverage to hurl a spear with greater force and distance than an unaided throw.

The most common type is the atlatl—a shaft with a hook or socket that engages the spear's butt end.

Spear-thrower also refers to people who throw spears: The spear-throwers took aim at the charging boar.
