song cycle

Unified vocal sequence

A song cycle is a group of songs composed as a unified work, typically for solo voice with piano or orchestra accompaniment.

The songs share a theme, narrative, or poetic source and are meant to be performed together in sequence: Schubert's "Winterreise" is among the most celebrated song cycles.

The form emerged in 19th-century German Romantic music.
