solar halo
Sun's icy crown
A solar halo is a ring of light that appears around the sun, caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere refracting sunlight.
The most common type forms a circle at 22 degrees from the sun.
Solar halos often signal incoming weather changes, as the high cirrus clouds containing the ice crystals frequently precede storms: A solar halo ringed the afternoon sun.
