block tackle

Rope-and-wheel hoist

A block and tackle (often shortened to block tackle) is a system of pulleys and rope used to lift or move heavy loads.

The pulleys multiply force, allowing one person to raise weight they couldn't lift directly.

The term appears in nautical and construction contexts: We rigged a block tackle to hoist the engine out.
