slice serve
Curving tennis opener
A slice serve in tennis is struck with sidespin, causing the ball to curve through the air and skid low after bouncing.
The server brushes across the ball rather than hitting through it, producing a trajectory that pulls opponents wide of the court or jams them into their body.
It's a staple of tactical serving: Her slice serve dragged him off the doubles alley.
