slagheap

Industrial waste pile

A slagheap is a mound of waste material from mining or smelting operations—the rocky debris left after extracting ore.

Common in industrial regions, slagheaps became landmarks of coal country: The village sat in the shadow of an enormous slagheap.

The term sometimes appears figuratively for any accumulation of discarded material.
