single-tree
Trace attachment bar
A single-tree is a horizontal crossbar to which the traces of a harness are attached, allowing one horse to pull a vehicle or implement.
Also called a whiffletree or swingletree.
The pivoting bar distributes the pull evenly and absorbs jerking motions: He hitched the traces to the single-tree and clicked the horse forward.
