A silver filling is a dental restoration made from amalgam—a mixture of mercury with silver, tin, and other metals.
Despite the name, the color is gray rather than truly silver.
Once standard for filling cavities, silver fillings have been largely replaced by tooth-colored composite materials: The dentist replaced my old silver fillings with white ones.
