signpainter
Hand-lettering shop worker
A signpainter is someone who paints signs by hand—lettering shop windows, storefronts, and commercial displays.
The craft requires steady brushwork and knowledge of letterforms.
Though largely displaced by vinyl graphics and digital printing, signpainting persists as a traditional trade and has seen revival as an artisanal skill: The signpainter gilded the letters on the office door.
