A shoulder rest is a curved support that attaches to the back of a violin or viola, allowing the player to hold the instrument between chin and shoulder without strain.
Without one, players must either raise their shoulder unnaturally or grip harder with the chin.
Some classical purists prefer playing without a shoulder rest, but most modern players use them.
