St. Helena Island

Remote Atlantic territory

St.

Helena Island is a remote volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean, a British Overseas Territory famous as the place of Napoleon Bonaparte's final exile and death.

The island's isolation—over 1,200 miles from the nearest continental landfall—made it an ideal prison for the deposed emperor from 1815 until his death in 1821.

St. Helena remained without an airport until 2017.
