short ball
Pitched halfway down
A short ball in cricket is a delivery that bounces closer to the bowler than usual, causing it to rise toward the batsman's chest or head rather than at a comfortable height.
Bowlers use short balls to intimidate or force awkward shots: He peppered the tail-ender with short balls.
The batsman's options are to duck, sway away, or attempt a pull or hook shot.
