shell scripting

Command-line programming language

Shell scripting is writing programs in a shell language—the command-line interface of Unix-like operating systems.

These scripts automate tasks by stringing together commands that would otherwise be typed one at a time: I wrote a shell script to back up my files every night.

Bash is the most common shell scripting language, though others exist.

The term sometimes extends loosely to any command-line automation.
