sham marriage
Marriage of convenience
A sham marriage is a marriage entered into for purposes other than genuine partnership—typically to circumvent immigration law, gain citizenship, or obtain other legal benefits.
The couple may live separately and have no real relationship: He was convicted of arranging sham marriages for foreign nationals.
Also called a marriage of convenience, though that term can include arrangements with mutual practical benefit rather than fraud.
