service stations
Highway pit stops
Service stations are facilities where motorists stop to refuel vehicles, and often to buy snacks, use restrooms, or get minor repairs.
The term is slightly more formal than gas station in American usage.
In British English, service stations typically refer to larger complexes on motorways with multiple amenities: We stopped at a service station for coffee and petrol.
