sectarian tensions
Interfaith hostility brewing
Sectarian tensions are conflicts or hostilities between different religious, ethnic, or political factions within a larger group or society.
The phrase typically describes simmering divisions that haven't erupted into open violence but threaten to: Sectarian tensions between Sunni and Shia communities have destabilized the region.
The tensions may be religious, as in Northern Ireland's Catholic-Protestant divide, or involve other identity-based factions competing for power or resources.
