drive by

Pass without stopping

A drive-by is a shooting from a moving vehicle, typically targeting someone on the street or in a building: Three people were wounded in the drive-by.

The term extends to any quick, superficial action done in passing—a drive-by insult, a drive-by comment.

As an adjective, it describes something done hastily without full engagement: drive-by journalism, drive-by diagnosis.
