sauterne

Sweet white wine

Sauterne is an American spelling of Sauternes, the sweet French white wine from the Bordeaux region.

In the U.S., sauterne (without the final s) often refers to any inexpensive sweet or semi-sweet white wine, regardless of origin: a bottle of California sauterne.

The French original is made from grapes affected by noble rot, producing a rich, honeyed dessert wine.
