sandy dunes

Coastal grain mounds

Sandy dunes are hills or ridges of sand shaped by wind, typically found in deserts or along coastlines.

The phrase is technically redundant—dunes are by definition accumulations of sand—but appears in descriptive writing for emphasis or rhythm: We walked across the sandy dunes toward the beach.
