sacrifice play
Productive out attempt
A sacrifice play is a strategic move in baseball where a batter deliberately makes an out to advance a baserunner—typically a sacrifice bunt or sacrifice fly.
The batter "sacrifices" their at-bat for the team's benefit.
The term extends to any situation where someone accepts a personal loss to help others: It was a sacrifice play—she took the blame so her colleagues wouldn't get fired.
