dressed lumber
Milled, surfaced boards
Dressed lumber is wood that has been planed smooth on one or more sides, as opposed to rough-sawn lumber that comes directly from the sawmill with a textured surface.
The dressing process removes material, so dressed lumber is slightly smaller than its nominal dimensions—a dressed 2x4 actually measures about 1.5 by 3.5 inches.
Most lumber sold at hardware stores for general construction is dressed.
