road gang

Highway labor team

A road gang is a group of prisoners assigned to outdoor labor, especially maintaining or building roads.

The term evokes chain gangs and convict labor in the American South: He spent six months on a road gang in Georgia.

More generally, it can refer to any crew working on road construction or repair.
