ritual bathing
Sacred washing practice
Ritual bathing is the practice of washing the body as part of religious or spiritual observance, distinct from bathing for hygiene alone.
Many traditions prescribe it: Jewish mikveh, Islamic wudu before prayer, Hindu bathing in the Ganges, Christian baptism.
The water symbolically purifies, marking transitions or preparing the participant for sacred acts: Ritual bathing preceded her conversion.
