ripcords

Parachute release lines

Ripcords are cords that, when pulled, release or activate a mechanism.

The most familiar is the cord a parachutist pulls to deploy the parachute, but ripcords also appear on life rafts, fireworks, and other devices requiring quick manual activation.

Figuratively, pulling the ripcord means making a decisive exit or abandoning something: She pulled the ripcord on that relationship before it got worse.
