rip cords
Parachute activation lines
Rip cords are cords pulled to release a parachute from its pack, or to release gas from a balloon or airship.
The term extends to any cord that activates a mechanism when pulled sharply: She pulled the rip cord on her life jacket.
Figuratively, to pull the rip cord is to bail out of a situation before it gets worse.
