retronyms
Terms distinguishing originals
Retronyms are terms created when a new development forces us to rename an original thing that previously needed no modifier.
When email emerged, mail became snail mail.
When digital watches appeared, watches became analog watches.
Acoustic guitar, whole milk, manual transmission, World War I—all retronyms, coined only after their counterparts made the distinction necessary.
