reserve force
Military backup unit
A reserve force is a military organization whose members train part-time while maintaining civilian careers, ready to be called to active duty when needed.
In the United States, this includes the Army Reserve and National Guard; other countries have similar structures.
Reserve forces provide trained personnel who can be mobilized during wartime or national emergencies without maintaining a larger standing army: He served in the reserve force for twenty years while working as an engineer.
