research vessels
Oceangoing laboratory platforms
Research vessels are ships designed or equipped for scientific study at sea.
They conduct oceanographic surveys, marine biology expeditions, fisheries assessments, or climate monitoring.
Unlike commercial or military ships, their primary purpose is data collection: The research vessel returned with sediment samples from the ocean floor.
Also called research ships.
