rescue flare
Emergency light beacon
A rescue flare is a signaling device that produces bright light or colored smoke to attract attention in emergencies.
Flares are standard equipment on boats, aircraft, and in survival kits.
They can be handheld, fired from a gun, or deployed as floating markers: The stranded hikers set off a rescue flare when they spotted the helicopter.
