A regional blackout is the deliberate blocking of a broadcast—typically a sporting event—in a specific geographic area.
Networks and leagues impose blackouts to protect local ticket sales or exclusive broadcast rights: The game was subject to a regional blackout, so fans in the home market couldn't watch it on TV.
The term also applies to power outages affecting a particular region.
