Biased lending maps
Redlinings are instances of redlining—the discriminatory practice of denying services, especially mortgages and insurance, to residents of certain neighborhoods based on racial or ethnic composition.
The term comes from the literal red lines drawn on maps to mark areas deemed undesirable for investment.
The bank's redlinings systematically excluded Black families from homeownership.
The practice, though now illegal in the United States, left lasting effects on urban development and wealth inequality.
