redcaps

Railroad baggage handlers

Redcaps are porters at railroad stations, named for the red caps they traditionally wear to be easily spotted by travelers needing help with luggage.

The term is chiefly American and somewhat dated, as the role has declined with changes in rail travel.

In British folklore, a redcap is a murderous goblin said to haunt ruined castles along the Scottish border, dyeing its cap in victims' blood.
