donor-advised funds
Philanthropic giving vehicles
Donor-advised funds are charitable giving accounts held by sponsoring organizations.
A donor contributes to the fund, receives an immediate tax deduction, then recommends grants to nonprofits over time.
The sponsoring organization technically controls the assets, but donors typically direct where money goes: She moved appreciated stock into a donor-advised fund before the sale.
Critics note that funds can accumulate indefinitely without reaching charities.
