A ready-reckoner is a reference table or booklet providing pre-calculated answers to common arithmetic problems—prices at various quantities, interest rates, currency conversions, unit measurements.
Before calculators became ubiquitous, merchants and clerks relied on ready-reckoners for quick figuring: He consulted the ready-reckoner to calculate the discount.
The term now applies to any quick-reference guide that saves mental effort.
