queenside
Longer castling direction
The queenside is the half of a chessboard where the queens start—the a, b, c, and d files.
Players castle queenside by moving the king toward the a-file rook, written as O-O-O.
Queenside play often involves slower pawn advances and piece maneuvering: Black's queenside attack put pressure on the c-pawn.
Contrasts with kingside.
