quarter moons
Lunar halfway points
Quarter moons are the lunar phases when the moon appears half-illuminated—a semicircle of light.
The first quarter occurs about a week after the new moon, the third (or last) quarter a week after the full moon.
The name refers to the moon being one-quarter through its cycle, not to its visible shape: The quarter moon hung low over the trees.
