quadrats
Typesetter's metal blocks
Quadrats are small, usually square plots used in ecological field studies to sample and count organisms in a defined area.
A researcher might place a quadrat randomly in a meadow and record every plant species within it.
In typography, a quadrat is a block of metal spacing material used to fill blank areas—the origin of the term quad for a typographic space.
